Conceived as a piece of Texana to celebrate the rich heritage of Austin's oldest hotel, The Driskill Hotel follows the history of The Driskill from its founding in 1886 through a chapter on the hotel today. The book portrays the hotel as the central focus of politics and society in Austin and chronicles major events and ownership changes, as well as special guests and significant occasions.
The book also offers recipes for special occasions, pairing food selections from Austin's award-winning chef David Bull with rooms in the hotel that traditionally have been used to celebrate that occasion. These simple recipes utilize regional flavors and ingredients, as well as basic kitchen utensils for ease of preparation. Sample dishes include Texas Chop Salad with Smoked Bacon and Bleu Cheese, Gremolata Crusted Snapper with Orange-Tomatillo Salsa, and Cinnamon Coffee Cake French Toast with Fig Jam.
The Driskill Hotel has been written, published and printed exclusively by Austinites and local businesses. Texas native and actor/writer Turk Pipkin composed The Driskill's history, and executive chef David Bull of The Driskill drafted the recipes. Austin photographer Mark Knight contributed photography. The Driskill Hotel is designed by local design firm Action Figure and published by The Driskill Hotel. Printing is provided by fellow historic Austin company Capital Printing, founded in 1929.
